There has been little detailed study of galaxy NGC 784, in part because there are too many galaxies in the sky for each to be studied in depth. Most galaxies are observed only as part of a large sample. An astrono- mer might, for example, measure the neutral hydrogen of a hundred galaxies to determine the average content. Situated just outside the Local Group of galaxies, NGC 784 is a member of the Local Supercluster. It and a few others may belong to a nearby group known as NGC 1023.
